Our programmes…

Toddler

We are creating a community of self confident individuals by aiding their developmental, physical, emotional, social and cognitive needs.

Slice a fruit, sweep, wash some dishes, set the table, clean up the spills or maybe water some plants? They have their most loved activities always within their reach! Through these, our toddlers continuously develop the skills needed to foster independence and care for themselves and each other. Learning to move with balance and control, the child in Redwood truly belongs to a community, proven by how they gather around during the singing bouts or to listen to the bard telling stories! The Toddler community Is filled with language , rich ,expressive language! no baby talk here !

To further their skills, there are a multitude of puzzles, shape sorting, object matching and language exercises for the children to enjoy. We encourage them to explore various art mediums, storybooks, singing and exploring nature. With the right table, chair and shelf size, they can truly enjoy being themselves here.

We concentrate on their growing needs for exploration, movement, practical life, language, socialisation, personal care, wonderment of nature, independence and self-awareness with well planned materials. With an atmosphere where they are safe, confident and truly themselves they become valued members of the Starlight community.
We also help make them with regard to taking care of themselves -eating independently ,using the toilet by themselves achieved through a well thought out and immaculately executed process .

Transition:

– The first transition occurs when a child leaves home and enters The Toddler Community.
– Children enter The Toddler Community at ages as young as 13 months or from the time they start walking independently – and no later than 24 months. Children who can spend at least a year in The Toddler Community benefit greatly from the program.

House Of Children

Welcome to our next mini society – or better known as Redwood’s House of Children or The Primary Just like a mini society, we continuously encourage children here to collaborate and co-create, which reinforces the values of a community. Here they have freedom, but also limits to this freedom which benefit the entire community.
Just as Dr. Montessori says here “Education is an aid to Life”, an intrinsic part of this community is love for the child, a respect for his powers and an awareness of his needs. We embody this belief everyday.

Practical Life Exercises

For young children, behaving like an adult is the most exciting part of their day! There is always something special about tasks which an adult considers ordinary – washing dishes, paring vegetables, polishing shoes. Imitation is one of the strongest urges during children’s early years. In this area of the classroom, children perfect their coordination becoming absorbed in various activities of daily life. This gradually lengthens their span of concentration and increases their attention to details.

Sensorial Exercises

Filled with Sensorial Materials, the Montessori classroom helps children distinguish, categorise, and relate new information to what they already know. Dr. Montessori believed this is the beginning of conscious knowledge. We encourage this process of intelligence working in a team with senses for children’s development.

Mathematics

Dr. Montessori successfully demonstrated that with early access to mathematical equipment, children easily and joyfully assimilate facts and skills of arithmetic later. She designed concrete materials to represent all types of quantities, after she observed that children who became interested in counting, like to touch or move the items as they enumerate them. By combining this equipment, separating it, sharing it, counting it, comparing it, they can learn the basic operations of mathematics.

Language

Language is a living entity in the Montessori environment, the children’s voices being its joyful source. Singing and stories are ever present and children can always express their thoughts and ideas. There is also always an ear to listen. In a Montessori classroom, they start phonetic sounds of the letters before they can learn the alphabetical names in a sequence making the process of reading easier.

Language Exploration

Tamil and Hindi are introduced simultaneously to all the children. At Tefwood we practice language immersion . Hearing a language all around you makes you aware and learn it with ease .

Physical Geography

The large wood puzzle maps are loved the most by all. At first, the children use the maps simply as puzzles. Soon, they learn the names of many of the countries as well as information about climate and products illustrated in the maps. Children also learn the common land formations such as islands and peninsulas by making them with their own hands.

Art And Music

The great joy the child finds in creating something of his or her own is preserved here through Art. The children have the freedom to explore their imaginations and express themselves freely. We evaluate the end result here. Music in its many forms is found in all aspects of the classroom and is fundamental to the classroom.

Transitions

For some , entrance to House of Children is their first school experience. For others, they move up to it from The Toddler Community. In either event, this transition occurs at the age of 2 ½. Independent care of self is one sign of readiness for House of Children. This includes toileting and dressing. Children must be toilet trained prior to entering .

Elementary

Grades : 2- 6

The six year Montessori Elementary Programme comes with a unique perk. It makes the children experience being the youngest, the middle and the oldest! Each stage offers opportunities for the children to practise different skills. And thus help them interact with society as a member of a beloved community.
At the beginning, the children learn concepts through concrete materials. Over the years they move to abstraction. This shapes their journey of six years in their Elementary. The curriculum of the Montessori Elementary Programme is COSMIC EDUCATION, where children build knowledge on a topic, pause and dwell on the details and then make a connection between the topics. This eventually helps them develop a deeper understanding of how complex our Universe is. Apart from core knowledge and skills, we help them develop a positive attitude towards learning, which helps them remain Independent in all aspects of life.

The Elementary Montessori Programme is a 6 year programme offered to children from 6 to 12 years.
